Panic gripped passengers and motorists after a Link Bus travelling along the Mityana–Mubende Road suddenly burst into flames at Kikonge, causing a major traffic disruption and forcing travelers to flee for safety.
The bus, registration number UBF 966K, was reportedly travelling from Kampala to Mubende District when the terrifying incident happened. Witnesses said the trouble began after one of the tyres developed a mechanical fault moments before smoke started billowing from the vehicle.
Passengers onboard reportedly became alarmed after noticing smoke coming from the lower side of the bus as it moved at high speed. Within a short time, flames spread rapidly, triggering screams and confusion as people desperately rushed to get out.
Eyewitnesses said nearby residents responded quickly after spotting the burning bus along the roadside. Several people joined efforts to help frightened passengers escape while others tried to remove luggage before the fire intensified further.
“We saw thick smoke coming from the tyre area before flames spread across the bus. Passengers started jumping out in panic as people nearby rushed to help,” one witness narrated.
The dramatic incident attracted large crowds and caused temporary gridlock along the highway as motorists slowed down to witness the scene. Security officers later stepped in to manage traffic and clear the road as firefighters battled the blaze.
Despite the frightening moments, all passengers reportedly survived without injuries, something many described as miraculous considering the speed at which the fire spread through the vehicle. However, the bus suffered extensive damage during the incident.
By press time, authorities had not yet released an official statement on the exact cause of the fire. Police investigations are ongoing to establish what triggered the blaze and determine the extent of the losses caused.
